Be Careful when selling your jewelry items!
We have noticed over the past year or so many storefronts opening up with huge signs stating "WE BUY GOLD"
Just because they have a storefront does not make them experts in jewelry, gold, diamonds or watches. At least once a week I get some poor soul who was taken in by one of these places. They offer to buy a ring but want all the diamonds removed. They tell them to take their diamonds to Cape Jewelry Brokers, that we buy loose diamonds. The problem is that most items of jewelry are valued higher with diamonds intact. These "buyers" then use the wrong equipment to pry the stones out, or bend back the prongs. This results in chipping and damage to precious diamonds. A stone which may have been worth several thousand dollars is now virtually worthless, it will need to be recut.
I had one nice young lady in tears when she discovered her vintage diamond which was in a classic art deco setting had been chipped when it was incorrectly removed from its setting by an inexperienced gold buyer. She had been drawn into a store with a sign holder out front claiming "WE BUY GOLD" By looking at the picture of this ring she should have gotten top dollar. This was a classic art deco item from the 1920's. Highly collectable. The other "gold buyer" paid her $47.00 for the gold. He had convinced her that it would be best to remove the stone as he didnt buy diamonds. A 1.2 ct Old European cut diamond was now useless without investing in recutting, which drops its weight as well. Not only was a precious piece of art destroyed but the damage to the diamond rendered it useless. We have seen local jewelry stores that "specialize in diamonds" who can't properly evaluate a diamond or want it removed so they can have the gold.
