What does "Consignment" mean?

"Consignment shop" is an American English term for second hand stores that offer used goods at a lower cost than new. Many offer new items as well.

In the context of sale, it is usually understood that the consignee (the seller) pays the consignor (the person who owns the item) a portion of the proceeds from the sale. Payment is not made until and unless the item actually sells. The consignor retains title to the item at all times, and can end the arrangement at any time by requesting return of the item. A specified period of time is commonly arranged, after which time if the item does not sell the owner can reclaim the item (or, if not reclaimed within a period of time, the seller can dispose of the item at his discretion).

"When is the best time of year to consign items in Florida?"

Because of the seasonal nature of Southwest Florida we find that the best times to consign Jewelry items varies thruout the year.  Because of our decades of experience working as business consultants within the Luxury Jewelry market thruout the world we know quite well which items sell at various times of the year.  As an example consider wedding sets.  An inexperienced jeweler may ramp up his marketing for bridal jewelry in the Spring hoping to sell to the June bride.  In reality the majority of bridal sets are sold in the Fall.  That sales opportunity is long gone by Spring.  They may sell a few, and blame a poor economy, however sales in bridal jewelry still remains robust dispite the economy!   November thru April is a strong time for selling Jewelry and antiques in Florida.

We are currently accepting consignments

We are looking for larger Diamond jewelry, fine colored gemstone Jewelry, antique jewelry, all vintage items, Native American Jewelry, fine crystal items, artwork, quality Grandfather clocks, fine watches, sterling silver sets or anything of interest.

Because of the complex nature of most Jewelry or antique items Cape Jewelry Brokers prefers to evaluate items for consignment  by appointment only.   Please call us at 239-677-1320 and we can set up an appointment time that is convenient for you.   We are available on a walk in basis Monday thru Thursday from 11:00 AM until 5 PM however the store usually has quite a few buying customers in at those times and evaluations of incoming items can be difficult.  We want this to be a good experience for you, if you have scheduling issues just give us a call and we can work something out.

Consignors set their own prices but the staff is available to make price suggestions.   Our goal is to present your items in the best possible way, price the item so that the seller gets a fair price and the buyer gets a good value.

"What are your consignment terms?"

The consignment rate is 30% (consignor receives 70% of the selling price, the store gets 30% of the selling price). The consignment period is three months.   All items are carefully evaluated on intake, pictures taken, documentation of attributes of item.  The seller will receive a typewritten inventory of items along with copy of the consignment agreement.   Upon sale of the item the seller will be notified via phone, email or letter.  Payout of funds takes two weeks, this allows time in case of a problem with the sale.  These rarely happen but its best to be safe for all parties involved.

"If my item doesn't sell do I have to pay a fee?"

No.  The only time a fee may incur is if a repair was needed prior to selling the item, but we usually ask for the repair to be completed prior to consigning or selling the item "as is".   We aren't going to be charging you any hidden handling fees, stocking fees or evaluation fees.    We try to keep things uncomplicated.  If the item sells there is the 70/30 split, if the item doesn't sell, no fee.

"Do you sell items on eBay?"

I love eBay.  Ebay will probably go down in history as the main reason people in this decade started shopping online.   I enjoy clicking thru all of the pages and looking  at all of the items.   Would I list a clients items on eBay?   No.   While eBay does attract a vast audience of buyers, these buyers are sniffing for bargains.  Quality items usually sell for much less than their true worth.  Add on top of that eBay fees, Paypal fees, the consignment shops fees and so on.  The seller also runs the all too frequent risk of fraud by unscrupulous buyers.   The goal of a consignment broker is to achieve as high of a dollar amount for an item for their client in the safest way possible.  This will not be achieved by utilizing eBay.
